There’s been a major shift in society over the past 20 or so years and it is wreaking havoc on self-esteem and the health of the public.
Everything is just a click away and feeds in to our "FOMO" (fear of missing out). The need for insta-gratification purchases --from coffee to food delivery to high end beauty products to gadgets and apps and full price on clothes.
But when I listen to women, they are resistant to investing in themselves --- hobbies, health, and learning and growing. Not only is this a disservice to OUR health BUT we are teaching OUR KIDS to not prioritize themselves and this is the root of a healthy lifestyle. It's not too late to change this and experience your best health and lead our kids by this example.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Benjamin Franklin",
Perhaps we don't realize we are resisting prioritizing ourselves. Resistance is one of those sneaky things that can show up in a multitude of clever ways. It's more obvious in certain scenarios, like resisting jumping into a cold plunge because it's cold. It becomes more subtle and tricky when it's disguised and hidden and thus difficult to pinpoint because we have adopted conditioning from our culture, upbringing and our formulated belief systems based on "what we know". Some examples of this resistance are procrastination or scarcity, Thinking that we'll do it tomorrow/next week/next season or thinking we don't have the money when in fact we just made one of the above "insta-gratification" purchases.
Many of my clients don't feel like they have resistance. Many of you reading will think this, too.
Anything that challenges these ingrained structures of our persona seems like a threat and we will subconsciously defend against any change to that familiar pattern (even if the change could be super helpful).
When we can remove ourselves from the immediate situation and see the bigger picture, which involves inquiry around how stepping into the unknown can be a tremendous benefit. This is where courage, intuition and trust come in....
I know this first hand because I resisted anything having to do with it for years. It wasn't until I simply dove in and faced my fear that change happened. Mothers face unique challenges because we just want to spend all of our money on our kids. Mindfully investing in self love, learning/growing, hobbies etc is VITAL for optimal mental & physical health.
Ultimately, why invest in yourself is the incorrect question, for it feeds into the belief system that pleasure should come for free from within as a healing modality for physical health, empowerment and abundance.

Gut health is the key to overall health.
The health of your gastrointestinal tract is directly related to the health and function of your immune system. The microbiome is a collection of microorganisms that are predominantly found in your gut. For example, your gut bacteria have many beneficial roles such as regulating your metabolism, mood, cognitive function, appetite, digestion and immunity. Just as the majority of the microbiome lives in the gut, so does about 70% of your immune system. The gut is a great place for the majority of the immune system to be located since this is where many harmful pathogens including viruses, parasites and harmful bacteria first enter your body.
While you can nourish your gut with healthy food and delicious drinkable concoctions, yoga can be another way to help keep your digestive health on track. Lee Holmes, registered yoga teacher, gut expert, and author of Heal Your Gut, says a regular yoga practice is vital to gut health.
Your body is telling you that you need to clean up your gut if....
- You suffer from frequent bloating, gas, constipation, or other uncomfortable digestive symptoms,
- You get frequent headaches or migraines
- You have chronic inflammation and pain
- You're lethargic or have trouble sleeping
- You have skin issues, adult acne, psoriasis, eczema, etc
- You have hot flashes, stress, fear, or anxiety

With this week being the official last week of summer, I am offering a final chance to relish in the the "here and now" of summer with a final Paddleboard Yoga class until June 2023!
When you lift weights, your muscles get stronger and bigger. Think of Yoga as weight lifting for the brain.
Plus we have this oh so awesome opportunity to be outdoors, at the lake absorbing our vitamin D for the day....a mini-getaway that'll have you back for the rest of the weekend BUT in a more relaxed state & clearer head. All exercise can boost your mood by lowering levels of stress hormones, increasing the production of feel-good chemicals known as endorphins, and bringing more oxygenated blood to your brain. But yoga may have additional benefits. Learn more reading this Harvard Medical School article.
When you focus on the past that's like living in a state of depression. When you focus on the future that's like living in a state of anxiety. Join me for the "here and now", the true place of mental peace and enjoy the final week of summer with Paddleboard Yoga...
- Reserve your board for the Final Group class on September 24th @ 10am at the Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve

What does back-to-school season mean for you as a mom?
Whether you're about to become a mom, a mom of toddler, teens or even a grandkids, it can feel impossible to find time for your own hobbies. Parents often forget about their own passions and hobbies and revitalizing this part of life can be life changing. It’s all about balance. Learning and growing shouldn't get put on the backburner as a sacrifice for your children’s activities. When you lead by example, you are teaching your kids to prioritize themselves and this is the root of a healthy lifestyle. It's not too late to change this and experience your best health.
We need to recognize mother’s for ALL that they do. They literally birth a human being from inside their uterus and provide all the support they can for their family and children while balancing relationships, jobs, and social life. But in addition to all that they struggle with on a day to day basis, mothers also face unique mental challenges. As a mother myself, I can relate to how challenging it can be to navigate everything life has to throw at us. Just remember: YOU CAN’T DO IT ALL. Mindfully finding self compassion and self love while you experience motherhood is VITAL for optimal mental health.
Mindfulness is defined as the awareness that results from focusing attention on the present moment.
For pregnant women, a mindful practice can contribute to relieving some of the pain, discomfort, stress, and anxiety that accompanies pregnancy to allow for a more relaxed, connected experience.
There are many practices that are uniquely designed for pregnant women offering support both mentally and emotionally during gestation and after birth, including prenatal yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises.

For moms of big kids, teens or even grandkids, be sure to carve out time each week to do something you love. You love to run? Knit? Read a book? Garden? Whatever it is, find time for it. And remember while you are doing this thing you love to bring intention into it. Take deep breaths and remind yourself this is YOU time and that it is not only OKAY for you to give this precious time to yourself, but it is ESSENTIAL. This is mindfulness and one of the 8 steps in the ancient practice of Yoga to live a healthy & purposeful life.
