Did you know that low levels of vitamin D have been linked to people with depression?
What is Vitamin D?
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is both a nutrient we can get from food and is also a hormone our bodies make. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus and thus is a critical component for building strong bones. According to the School of Public Health at Harvard University, studies have shown that Vitamin D can also reduce cancer cell growth, help control infections, and reduce inflammation.
How do we get vitamin D?
Unfortunately, there are few foods that contain it, so many people use supplements. There are two types of Vitamin D supplements, vitamin D2 and vitamin D3, both which are naturally produced by the sun’s ultraviolet-B rays.
To get your daily dose of vitamin D, be sure to spend time outside! Although it is important to protect the skin when in the sun, we also need to be exposed to the sun to be at optimal health. Yet another good reason to spend more time outdoors! It’s one of the reasons I teach my yoga classes outside.
